Balsam Hill®
Our Journey Beyond Reusability
Driven by innovation, we’re working toward more sustainable solutions for the next generation.
NextGen
Materials
Advancing our trademark True Needle® technology, we’re developing materials from recycled content and plant-based polyethylene with Balsam Hill’s signature quality and realism.
Learn MoreNextGen
Recycling
We lead our industry in reusability and longevity, we’re piloting programs for artificial tree recycling and refurbishment, and we're working with GBCI to adopt zero-waste practices.
Learn MoreNextGen
Carbon
We commit to lowering the carbon footprint of every Balsam Hill® reusable tree over its lifetime and exploring the possibility of artificial tree recycling infrastructure.
Learn MorereUSE
Since our founding in 2006, all Balsam Hill trees have been inspired by nature and designed for reUSE over the years, for all your holidays.
Shop All TreesreNEW
In 2025, we rolled out our reNEW™ commitment across all our True Needle® technology, transitioning to GRS-certified recycled or plant-based plastic, and reducing our reliance on virgin, fossil-based resources.

In 2025, we are taking our first steps toward tree recycling with a pilot in Dublin (Ireland). If successful, what we learn will inform our expansion plan for recycling in other regions, and refurbishment options for trees.

Recycled Plastic
Since 2025, our trees with True Needle® technology are made from 30% post-consumer, GRS-certified recycled polyethylene sourced from tear-away water bottle caps. We plan to reach 50% through further research and development.
In 2025, we transitioned to 30% GRS-certified recycled polyethylene True Needle® tips in all of our trees.
Learn MorePlant-Based Plastic
Our sugarcane-based polyethylene has C-14 certification for 95% bio-based carbon content. We’ll increasingly use this plant-based plastic for select trees with True Needle® technology across our collection.
We are increasing our use of 95% plant-based polyethylene in trees, starting with sparse True Needle® trees.
Learn MoreRecycled Metal
In an effort to decrease our carbon footprint and reduce waste, we’re exploring the use of recycled steel and recycled aluminum in future trees, without compromising Balsam Hill’s high standards of quality.
We’re exploring a transition to 50% recycled steel and researching ways to reduce emissions in production beyond using scrap metal.
Learn MoreWe've reduced single-use plastic in our packaging and piloted recycling programs for trees and light strings. There's lots we've done and lots more to do.
Learn MoreTree Recycling
We spent two years researching and developing technology and systems to recycle artificial trees. Starting in 2025, we're testing an artificial tree recycling pilot in Dublin, with plans to expand globally.
Light Recycling
From San Francisco (U.S.) to Dublin (Ireland), we're working to expand awareness and access to recycling programs for holiday light strings, when you buy or recycle your tree.
Recycle-Ready Packaging
We started by eliminating bubble wrap and moving to paper tape in most of our tree packaging, and now we’re working to shift away from expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polybags in our décor packaging.
Longevity lowers the carbon footprint of an artificial tree. So, we’re designing trees to last, making them with more sustainable materials and pursuing circular recycling and refurbishment systems wherever possible.
Learn MoreCarbon Intensity
We worked with WAP Sustainability Consulting to calculate the carbon footprint of our own trees. Compared to a mass-market artificial tree, the carbon intensity (kg CO2e/kg) of a reusable Balsam Hill tree is lower, making our trees more carbon efficient.
Science-Based Target
We’re exploring a Science-Based Target for emissions, establishing a clear roadmap to emissions reduction, and we’re verifying a decarbonization calculator for our trees. Most of our trees are assembled at a factory partially powered by solar.
Industry Standards
We prioritize raw materials suppliers who are certified to the Global Recycled Standard for polyethylene or steel, and we ask for C-14 testing to confirm renewable content percentages in our bio-based polyethylene.
From recycled materials to plant-based polyethylene, we're branching out with new ways to make holiday magic more sustainable.
Learn More2024
In 2024, we introduced the reNEW™ collection of trees made with GRS-certified, post-consumer recycled or plant-based polyethylene to reduce our reliance on virgin, fossil-based resources.
2025
With our reNEW™ commitment, we’re expanding our use of recycled and plant-based polyethylene to all of our True Needle® technology and piloting tree recycling programs.
*Inventory purchased prior to 2025 may not contain updated recycled or renewable content.
2026
We plan to accelerate our transition to recycled content with GRS-certified 50% recycled polyethylene and we’re working toward low-impact and recycled steel across our trees.
2030
We commit to lower the carbon footprint of every Balsam Hill® reusable tree over its lifetime and explore the creation of artificial tree recycling infrastructure.
